Good-quality care in the intrapartum and early postnatal period are critical to ensuring maternal, fetal and newborn survival and well-being.
The Global Maternal and Newborn Platform is the first initiative to assess quality of care and adherence to the latest recommendations from the World Health Organization in health facilities around the world. Importantly the Global Maternal and Newborn Platform also measures the experience of women during childbirth and the days following birth.

Objectives

The Global Maternal and Newborn Platform is evaluating the quality of intrapartum and early postnatal care provided to women and newborns in participating health facilities by:

1

Measuring coverage of key intrapartum and early postnatal care practices in participating health facilities and whether key WHO intrapartum and early postnatal care recommendations are being implemented.

2

Measuring women’s  experiences of intrapartum and early postnatal care in participating health facilities

3

Measuring frequency of key maternal and newborn health outcomes related to the intrapartum and immediate postnatal.

We’re conducting a programme using data gathered periodically from a network of up to 1,000 health facilities in 50 countries. We are collecting information at an individual (women and their babies), health care provider and facility level. Women will complete a survey before leaving hospital to better understand their experiences with the care they received.

Healthcare provided
to women

Using medical records, information of all eligible women and their babies will be reviewed and data extracted from medical records. The collected data, which is non-
identifiable, covers maternal characteristics, risk factors, coverage of key interventions, mode of birth, and health outcomes for mothers, newborns, and perinatal outcomes.

Pre-discharge

survey with women

Randomly selected eligible women, will participate in the survey just before discharge from the hospital or at 7 days post-birth (whichever is earlier). The survey will collect information about their experience giving birth and after birth for themselves and their baby.  To maintain confidentiality, audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (ACASI) will be employed. Using ACASI, participants listen to recorded instructions in their chosen language and input responses using touchscreen.

Survey with health
workers

Nurses, midwives and physicians working the participating health facilities will complete a questionnaire capturing their knowledge, attitudes and intrapartum & postnatal care practices for mothers and their newborns.

Health facility
surveys

The health facility coordinator or a trained research assistant will complete a questionnaire to gather facility-level information, facilitated by communication with the Head of Obstetrics & Neonatology/Paediatrics Departments.  The facility assessment form will collect information on the context of intrapartum and early postnatal care, covering:

1

Facility details such as type, specialization level, admission volume, births, and maternal/perinatal deaths.

2

Organization and services, including infrastructure, supplies, equipment, and human resources.

3

Policies and protocols regarding intrapartum and postnatal care, as well as the management of complications.
